Syd and Ria: first two koo ever

These were the very first koo & poppets I ever made!
You can't see the bear's eyes and there's just something *off * about that bunny's face.....I don't trust him....he looks like a pick-pocket, or some character of equivalent shadiness....

but practice I did, and soon I found the look I was after. my stitches have really improved since then too :)
It's fun to look back and see how they've evolved. These two dinosaurs live in Sadie's room.
They don't have names and they don't have likes or dislikes. So hows about I make those up on the spot:

(bear) "Ria"
likes: auspiciousness
dislikes: bad timing

(bunny) "Syd"
likes: loose change
dislikes: law enforcement

Let's just say that these two are the Bonnie & Clyde of K&P.

Happy American Thanksgiving!
See you on Black Friday - there will be a sale in the shop from November 26 - December 4.

Koo & Poppet scarves in hi-def

Better photos, as promised!

My little love was a most cooperative model this time. I said to her, "Sadie, would you wear a scarf and we'll go outside and Mommy will take your picture?" Usually she would have responded with a polite but firm "NO THANK YOU", but instead she said "okAAAYYY!"
As long as I show her the resulting photo on the camera afterward, she's all good. Except she touches it like it's a touch screen (ipone over-exposure) and doesn't understand why you can't browse through the pictures with a sweep of your finger :-)

Gingham, polka dots, and sailboats

Filigree and woodland critters

Modern dots

a colourful stack

This is the moment on ANTM "panel" when TBanks says:

"It's all about the garment. You're really selling the scarf."

And Andre Leon Talley says:

"And yet, there's still a connection with your eyes and the audience. It's like you're looking into our souls."

And Miss Jay says:

"I don't know. This isn't working for me. I love the dimples, but there's something awkward about the tongue."

New sniffy faces

Bear 2.0 heart version is on her way to "Baby Ruby's house" as Sadie says. I don't normally name them after the children they belong to, but for some reason "Ruby Bear" has stuck! I think it suits her.

I am trying to think of a good name for this sleepy fellow.....any ideas?

And this is Jessie. She likes butterscotch and dislikes cavities.

Who is your favourite?

Re-Inventing the School Photo: Stomping Ground

Now THIS is what a school portrait should look like:

But instead, most of us grew up with school photos like this:

Ahhhhhh, the cloudy background. Let us take a moment to revel in its glory.

Yes, that is yours truly in 1985. Woooot! Let's hear it for '85!!
Miss Chubs! Killer bangs, as usual. (and no, I did not go to a private school. I just liked my plaids, okay?)
It appears Renee Zellweger took a cue or two from my pursed smile. Copycat.

Well I am hear to shout from the rooftop that Stomping Ground has really saved the day when it comes to school portraits.
Based in Brooklyn, NY, these peeps are on to something. I love the commitment in these photos! Just look at this warrior's clenched fist. Now that's passion.

I first discovered Stomping Ground in a summer issue of Print Magazine and I just had to share with you.
Aaron Kenedi writes:
"If ever there was a visual trope in need of an overhaul, the school portrait is it. Perhaps you have overcome the agony, shame and abject horror of having your most awkward years captured for posterity, but 30 years later, I still have not. So when I heard about the photography studio Stomping Ground, my heart swelled for all those kids who will be spared such lingering wounds. The big idea at Stomping Ground? Let kids be kids. Let them celebrate themselves how they choose, in all their goofy, adorable, sweet, funny, and enviable glory. Let them laugh and dance, wearing the Batman costume or the princess tiara. Kids don't get to be kids for nearly long enough - so why not encourage them to enjoy it while it lasts? These are photos you'll acutally want to look at 20 - 0r 30 - years later instead of hiding them away in a drawer."
